Things to Consider While Buying a Suitcase
Before we go ahead with a detailed review of what makes each of the suitcases stand out, let’s first understand what we need to consider when looking for an international suitcase.
Luggage Size and Weight Restriction:
158 cm size and 23kg (and above) are the standard for international luggage restrictions. In most cases, international luggage size is not as important as luggage weight.
Number of Travel Days
How many days do you usually travel for? Is it for 1 week, 2 weeks, a month or more?
It’s preferable to have a medium-sized suitcase if you are traveling for 1-2 weeks. In this case, opting for a large suitcase may impede your mobility.
However, if your adventures extend beyond that timeframe, a larger suitcase could be a more suitable choice.
Personally, I have traveled for 2-3 months at a time but I still prefer a medium-sized suitcase as I’m more comfortable lugging it around independently. Also, you can always wash and repeat clothes when you are traveling for a longer term.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference, so it’s best to decide before you buy your luggage.
Are you a frequent traveler?
If you are a frequent traveler, then I highly recommend investing in a premium-quality suitcase with a longer warranty period. On the other hand, if you travel 1 or 2 times a year, you could opt for a more budget-friendly suitcase.

Do you need a soft-side or a hard-side luggage?
Soft-side bags are made from nylon, polyester, canvas, or other flexible materials. These are lightweight and are usually considered for cabin bags as they can be compressed in overhead compartments.
On the other hand, hard-side bags are made from ABS, polycarbonate, or polypropylene. They are more rigid and sturdier and therefore offer more protection for your luggage. Preferrable for check-in bags.
Hard Side Suitcase Materials
- Polypropylene: If you are looking for something that’s budget-friendly but at the same time durable, then Polypropylene is a good choice. Preferrable for less frequent travelers.
- Polycarbonate: Superior flexibility, crack resistance, and heightened durability compared to Polypropylene. Top pick for travelers seeking resilient and versatile luggage that also lasts longer. For international travel, I’d recommend polycarbonate hard suitcases as it’s lightweight, weather-proof, and durable.
- ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): ABS is generally lighter than Polycarbonate but not as durable. If your buying decision is solely based on cost alone, then consider ABS as it’s the cheapest of the lot.
- Aluminum: Aluminum suitcases are the classic choice and the most expensive on this list. They are highly durable and lightweight making them the right choice if cost is not an issue for you. Personally, I think this is a bit of an overkill. Unless you are looking for a lifetime suitcase, this isn’t usually required.
Does the Suitcase come with a TSA Lock?
The TSA combination lock lets you secure your luggage with a personal code, while still granting the Transport Safety Authority (TSA) access for inspection using a special key. You won’t receive a key for your TSA lock because it’s exclusively for airport authorities’ use.
You’d know you have a TSA lock if there’s a red diamond on your lock.
All the trolley bags mentioned in this list come equipped with TSA locks, ensuring your luggage remains secure during travel.

Color
It’s a matter of personal preference, but opting for brightly colored luggage can be advantageous as it easily stands out amidst a sea of black or dark-colored bags at baggage claim and other locations. So, think about selecting a distinctive color for your trolley luggage if possible.
Now that we have covered things to consider when buying a suitcase, let’s talk about the best check-in suitcases available.
