Santa Fe, New Mexico’s capital, is located in the foothills of Sangre de Cristo. It’s a historic town overflowing with arts and culture. Founded as a Spanish colony in 1610, this extraordinary destination is influenced by both Spanish and Native American cultures.
Around the turn of the century, artists (attracted by the climate and the beauty of the area) moved to Santa Fe. In consequence, the city soon tuned out to be a popular art colony. Santa Fe is also prominent for its Pueblo-style architecture and as a creative arts hotbed. Additionally, it offers endless opportunities for learning and discovery — be it in art galleries, museums, or opera houses, you are going to be spoiled with choices.
Meow Wolf
[toc]
Owned by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, Meow Wolf boasts the House of Eternal Return — an explorable and immersive modern art installation. And, it inspires visitors of all ages. This wildly imaginative art space is a collaboration of over 100 local artists. It’s a unique combination of children’s museum, art gallery, jungle gym, and fantasy novel. Most specifically, the décor recalls the 1970s, with faux-wood paneling, afghan-covered beds, and a hamster cage in a child’s bedroom.
Santa Fe Opera House
Santa Fe Opera House is a point of visual and architectural wonder. It runs annually from late June to the third week of August, with five operas presented in rotating repertory.
New Mexico Museum of Art
For 100 years, the New Mexico Museum of Art has served as a catalyst for creativity and the enjoyment of culture. It includes works by a vast swath of well-known artists. However, it is relatively small. Apart from New Mexico Museum of Art, you can find other popular museums in Santa Fe including Museum of International Folk Art and Palace of Governors.
Loretto Chapel
Now, a museum and a wedding chapel, this former Roman Catholic church, is popular among tourists. Most noteworthy, for its unusual helix-shaped spiral staircase – a mysterious spiral staircase built without nails, dowels or any visible support.
Flamenco dance
There are popular institutions offering electrifying flamenco performances in town. You can catch performances at either Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe, Maria Benitez Cabaret Theater, or Antonio Granjero & Entreflamenco Company.
Walking tours
Discover Santa Fe’s thriving art scene through the variety of walking tours.
The Santa Fe Railyard Arts District Food Tour, for instance, is a 3.5-hour walking food tour of Santa Fe’s Railyard Arts District. Over the course of the tour, you’ll walk approximately a mile and a half while visiting two sit-down restaurants, a winery or distillery tasting room (depending on the day), and one additional food or drink establishment. And, it sets you behind by around $79.
Or head on an interesting Santa Fe Scavenger Hunt tour.
Home to over 80 art galleries, Canyon Road can be a bit daunting to the amateurs. So, consider taking Santa Fe’s Canyon Road Art Gallery Interactive Tour. This walking tour is a short and sweet introduction to Santa Fe’s thriving art scenes. With a curated selection of art galleries, the two-hour tour encapsulates the Canyon Road experience.
Enjoying Santa Fe’s cultural scene is easy since there are plenty of accommodation options, expert tours, and tons of destinations. Plan your trip to Santa Fe today!
